Frequently asked questions

General (Regeneration after sport):

In order to make progress in sport, you need a training stimulus followed by a period of relaxation. Without this interaction, your level of performance stagnates or can even drop.

1.     Why do I need regeneration after my exercise?

Harder, better, faster, stronger. Sport is an intentional on stress with the aim of making progress in training. But the breaks are just as important as well-planned training sessions. That is because while you train, your body has to adapt to a new, external stimulus. Certain functional systems in the body are unbalanced (brought out of homeostasis) by the load. After training, the body does its best to restore balance during its rebuilding processes. Without an adequate regeneration phase, the training effects are reduced and, among others, you increase your susceptibility to injury.

2.     How long should the regeneration phase be after training?

How long the regeneration phase lasts depends on several factors. Here, for example, the personal training status, the load intensity and the age, to name a few. As a guide - which can be viewed as the optimal regeneration time – it should be a period of between 48 and 72 hours between the two training sessions. These can also be shorter.

Please note: It does not work without breaks and regeneration! However, this is not a license to do nothing: This advice only applies to muscle parts that were used the last time.

3.     The difference between active and passive regeneration:

Active regeneration is primarily about movement with low stress. It promotes blood circulation so that metabolic products and any damaged tissue can be broken down more quickly. In doing so, a new training stimulus is set with the aim of using the musculoskeletal system while protecting the joints (e.g. By light spinning, jogging, or aqua jogging).

Passive regeneration includes all measures in which one does not move actively. These include sleep, nutrition, progressive muscle relaxation (e.g. yoga, physiotherapeutic measures, fascia training, heat or CRYOTHERAPY).

Cryotherapy:

1.     What is cryotherapy?

Cryotherapy is the therapeutic treatment using cold. It is an element of the so-called thermotherapy, which has been practiced by humans since ancient times. In cryotherapy, the body is cooled as a whole or only on very specific parts of the body (local cryotherapy).

 2.     How does cryotherapy work?

- Reduced blood flow: Even deep layers of tissue contract after an application period of approx. 10 minutes. This reduces the blood supply, which leads to a reduction in possible muscle damage.

- Inhibition of inflammation: Long-term, targeted cryotherapy slows metabolic and inflammatory processes.

- Relief of pain: As the temperature decreases, the tissue becomes less sensitive to pain. This can also reduce the subjective feeling of pain.

- Efficient lowering of heart rate and body temperature

- Improved sleep quality, increased subjective well-being. All this leads to better, faster regeneration after training and competitions.

The icebein recovery system:

1.     What is the icebein recovery system?

The icebein recovery system is a unique device for the regeneration achieved through cooling. It consists of a cooling unit - the so-called chiller - which can cool water down to 5 degrees (WITHOUT ICE). The temperature can be individually adjusted. This chiller is connected to the icebein Legs I, through which the cooled water is continuously pumped. It is therefore the perfect, modern, mobile and hygienic alternative to an ice bath.

2.     What types of muscles are being cooled?

The entire leg and gluteal muscles are cooled. This includes all the joints, tendons and ligaments of the legs.

3.     Can icebein also do compression?

The icebein recovery system does not generate active compression. A (slight) passive compression can be created with the icebein recovery tights I. In addition, there is the effect of vasoconstriction: the cold treatment leads to a narrowing of the veins. This creates a compression-like feeling in the legs.

The icebein Chiller I:

1.     What are the advantages of the icebein icebein chiller I?

Up to now, ice cubes were required for every cryotherapy application and the temperature could not be regulated. With our icebein Chiller I you don't need anything except three liters of water and a socket. Set it to your desired temperature and your regeneration session can begin. In the long run, icebein not only saves you money, but also time and effort. Environmentally, it helps you save on CO2 emissions, water and plastic waste.

2.     What do I fill the icebein Chiller I with?

In order to guarantee the longevity of the device, we recommend using distilled water. In addition, the water should be mixed with the icebein disinfectant. This will help counteract any microbial load inside the system. The water in the device should be changed at least every 2-4 weeks (depending on temperature and/or solar radiation).

If you do not have distilled water, you can also use regular tap water. In that case, the system should be emptied immediately after use.

3.     How do I empty the icebein Chiller I?

Open the valve on the chiller with the help of the additional male connector. Place the other end of the hose into a bucket and start the pump. This way, nearly all of the water is pumped out of the chiller. (Occasional residues are o.k.) Please ensure: Open the cap of the filler neck to prevent a vacuum from forming inside the cooling unit. 4.     How do I change the temperature on the icebein Chiller I?

Would you like to adjust the temperature on the icebein Chiller I individually? No problem: Hold down one of the two gray arrow buttons (UP or DOWN) on the control panel of your chiller for a few seconds. Once you hear a second short beep, you can use the same buttons to adjust the temperature up or down. Please note: There is a difference of 1-3 degrees Celsius between the temperature displayed and the actual temperature of your legs. This is partially the body heat that every person radiates.

Furthermore, we cannot heat the water, only cool it!

The icebein legs I:

 1.     Icebein Legs I:

Your icebein legs I consist of two components: The "icebein softshell pants I" and the "icebein cooling pads I". The "icebein softshell pants" are made of a high-quality softshell material that is lined with fleece on the inside. With the help of the Velcro fasteners on the side, the pants can be perfectly fir to almost any leg thickness.

The "icebein cooling pad I" is made of a guaranteed skin-friendly polyurethane plastic. This continuously pumps the water out of the chiller and thus ensures constant and even cooling of the leg and gluteal muscles.

2.     The right pants size?

We offer the icebein Legs I in four different sizes. The following sizes are available: 1, 2, 3 and 4. You can find detailed information in our size chart (link).

Please note: If you are between two different sizes, we always recommend going for the larger icebein legs.

3.     The icebein Cryosphere:

The icebein Cryosphere forms an insulating layer between the leg and the outside temperature. This is thanks to the insulating materials used which ensures that the cold can penetrate even better into the deeper tissue layers instead of escaping into the environment.

4.     How do I clean my icebein legs I?

You can simply wash the icebein softshell pants in the washing machine (30 degrees; not suitable for tumble drying). Before doing this, removev the icebein cooling pad from your pants! The inside of the icebein cooling pad can be cleaned with the disinfectant from the water circuit. We also recommend using our disinfectant to clean the surface. Simply spray the icebein cooling pad with the disinfectant, leave it on for 20 to 30 seconds and wipe any remaining residue from the surface with a dry cloth.

Caution: Alcohol-based disinfectants may attack and damage the plastic material.

5.     How do I empty the icebein legs I?

Open the valve on the chiller with the help of the additional male connector. Place the end of the hose into a bucket and start the pump. You can watch the step-by-step instructional video by clicking on the following link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0R_ZvVU9gHQ

Application questions:

1.     How long does an icebein recovery session last?

We recommend an application duration of a maximum of 20 minutes per day. We are aware that the perception of cold differs from person to person. So, a session should be ended immediately if you feel unwell during the treatment (e.g. if you feel numbness in your legs).

2.     Which temperature is the right one?

Current scientific studies assume that the best regenerative effect is achieved at a temperature between 10 to 15 degrees Celsius. The same applies here: cold is perceived subjectively. Our tip from icebein: Start at slightly higher temperatures and then slowly settle into the temperature that is best for you.

3.     Should I prepare specifically for the application?

Yes! You should consider the following tips before every icebein recovery unit:

- Take care of your body: The application should always feel good and never be painful or uncomfortable. Especially in the cold months you should take a warm shower before each use!

- Keep your legs horizontal: Keep your legs as horizontal as possible during your recovery session. By doing this, you are supporting optimal water circulation.

- Pay attention to the placement of the tubes: The tubes (hoses between the icebein chiller and the icebein legs) also give off cold. Place these in such a way that they do not interfere with the application. Also, ensure the tubes are not pinched, twisted or folded.

- Use icebein soon after you end your training session: Try to use icebein within the first hour after finishing your exercise. This is how you will achieve the greatest possible regenerative effect.

Problems and Defect:

Icebein chiller I:

1.     The cooling will not start.

- Check whether the icebein chiller is connected to the power socket and that the device is switched on.

- Check whether the target temperature is set correctly (see icebein Chiller I, point 4). If the target temperature is identical to the ambient temperature, your recovery set will not cool the water down further.

2.     I cannot reach the target temperature while cooling. Thy could that be?

- The target temperature is not set correctly.

- There is not enough water in the system. Note: With new or unfilled cooling pads, approx. 1 liter of water (= water capacity of the pants) must be refilled to achieve the optimal cooling performance.

- The icebein chiller needs 220 V at 50 Hz to achieve the maximum cooling capacity. If these prerequisites are not met (e.g. by connecting one or more multiple plugs), the target temperature may not be reached.

Icebein Legs I:

 3.     The icebein legs won’t get (evenly) cold.

- A crease may have formed when putting on the trousers. This can impair the circulation of water. Open a couple of Velcro fasteners on the affected pant leg and carefully pull it straight.

- In order to counteract possible wrinkling, you should rinse your icebein Legs I with water before your (first) use. If the pads are already filled with water, this minimizes possible wrinkles when putting on the pants.

4.     The tubes from the chiller to the pants vibrate strongly.

- This is an indicator that the chiller is drawing a vacuum. Open the cap on the chiller and add some more water if necessary.

5.     Water leaks out of the chiller after use.

- Remove the pants from the chiller after each recovery session. Otherwise, the water from the pants can flow back into the chiller causing the integrated water tank to overflow.

6.     I have a problem that was not addressed in the FAQs.

- Please contact our Customer Service by e-mail (service@icebein.com) or by phone on +49 (0) 6359 917 02 17. We will address any issues and help you in the best possible way.
